TOKYO, Japan – September 11, 2025 – Sompo Japan Insurance Inc. (“Sompo Japan”), announced today the expansion of its Commercial Insurance business with two key appointments to propel its business transformation and strategy.
With the formation of Sompo Group’s business into Sompo Property and Casualty (re)insurance (“Sompo P&C”) and Sompo Wellbeing in February this year, Sompo Japan’s Commercial Insurance business will work even more closely with Sompo’s Overseas business to leverage its global capabilities, strengthen resilience and improve profitability under the Sompo P&C platform. Sompo Japan will continue to expand Commercial business underwriting and operational capabilities in the coming months as part of this transformation.
Under the latest changes, Heiko Thienenkamp was appointed as Chief Operating Officer, Commercial Business, while Hiroki Ohashi took on the role of Head of Financial Lines since September 1. Together, Mr Thienenkamp and Mr Ohashi will bring invaluable expertise to Sompo Japan’s Commercial Insurance business, driving operational excellence and sustainable financial growth. Mr Thienenkamp will have a dual reporting line into Katsuyuki Tajiri – Chief Operating Officer, Sompo Japan – and Kenneth Reilly – Chief Executive Officer, Insurance, Asia Pacific and Deputy President, Commercial Business, Sompo Japan. Mr Ohashi will report to Kenta Tezen – Chief Underwriting Officer, Sompo Japan.
Mr Reilly said: “I am excited to welcome Heiko and Hiroki to the team. With more than 25 years of leading organizational change from international consulting and insurance industries, I am confident Heiko will drive operational effectiveness for the Commercial business in Japan. This is just the beginning of the many developments and changes in the Japan Commercial team.”
Mr Tezen said: “Hiroki is a perfect fit for his role with almost 20 years of Financial Lines underwriting experience in global companies and strong relationships with key distribution partners. I look forward to working closely with Hiroki to build a market leading Financial Lines organization.”
Mr Thienenkamp and Mr Ohashi both join Sompo from large international carriers and were previously based in Japan.
